What UX Challenges Was The Coloring Channel Facing?

01

Moving Away From Manual Management

The existing experience relied heavily on manual processes to manage memberships, content and access, making it difficult to scale as the community grew.

02

Making the Learning Journey More Accessible

Users came with different levels of colouring experience and commitment. New members needed an approachable way to explore the platform and build confidence, while experienced colourists needed ways to continue developing their skills.

03

Keeping the Journey Engaging

Learning to colour is an ongoing process, and keeping users engaged beyond their first few lessons can be challenging. The experience needed to remain enjoyable as they continued learning and exploring.

How Did We Create a More Guided Learning Experience?

As The Coloring Channel community grew, the goal was to move away from manual, time-consuming processes and bring membership, content, and access management into one streamlined platform.

From a design perspective, we aimed to create a more seamless and encouraging learning experience for both new and experienced colourists helping them know where to start, easily discover what they need, feel motivated by their progress, and build the confidence to keep learning and creating.

Understanding the Business, Users & Ecosystem

Before defining the experience, we worked closely with stakeholders to understand the business, its growing community, and the challenges behind the existing experience. We explored the needs and behaviours of colourists, studied established learning and content platforms, and mapped the learning journey to identify opportunities for a simpler, more engaging experience.

Introducing The Coloring Channel

The marketing website was designed as the first touchpoint for prospective members, helping them understand what The Coloring Channel offers, explore its learning experience, and see the value of joining before entering the platform.

Powering the Member Experience Behind the Scenes

Moving away from manual content management, we created a flexible system that makes it easier to create, organise, and publish content at scale allowing the growing community to access the same experience without increasing manual effort.

Explore Before You Commit

Members had different levels of experience and commitment, and a first visit could feel like a significant step. We reduced the entry barrier by allowing members to explore the platform before committing, with free resources and guided onboarding helping them understand the value before signing up.

How Did We Design a Guided Learning Journey for The Coloring Channel?

Members came with different levels of digital confidence and colouring experience. We simplified the experience with clear navigation, guided entry points. The experience needed to support members from their first steps through continued learning, adapting to their progress, interests, and experience along the way.

Making Lessons Easier to Discover

A structured tagging and filtering system makes hundreds of lessons easier to find. Admins can tag content by relevant topics and techniques, while users can search, filter, explore and save lessons to quickly find what they need.

Designing for Motivation

We introduced small moments of encouragement throughout the experience from rewards and progress moments to playful characters and messages to make learning feel more enjoyable and give members reasons to keep coming back.

Designing a More Flexible Membership Experience

Membership needs can change over time. We designed flexible subscription controls that allow members to pause their plan, upgrade or downgrade between Pencil, Marker, and combined plans, or switch between mediums without having to cancel and start again.

Stripe integration powers these changes, giving members more control over their membership while making it easier to adapt their plan as their interests, availability, or learning needs change.

Building a Scalable Foundation

The platform was built to support a growing content library, rich artwork, and long-form learning while maintaining performance across devices. Through website development and web app development, the foundation was designed to make content delivery, learning experiences, subscriptions, and future platform growth easier to manage.

  • Scalable Architecture: Next.js and NestJS power the frontend and backend, with AWS RDS, S3, and CDN infrastructure supporting secure storage and efficient content delivery and scaleable web app developement.
  • Rich Media & Integrations: Vimeo supports long-form lesson videos, while Stripe enables flexible subscription management including upgrades, downgrades, switching, and pausing.
  • Responsive Experience: The platform adapts seamlessly across desktop, tablet, and mobile, keeping key learning flows accessible across screen sizes.
  • Validated Before Launch: Manual and performance testing helped validate critical flows, identify system thresholds, and define server capacity. A beta release two weeks before launch allowed us to identify issues through real usage and refine the experience before going live.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What was the main UX challenge with The Coloring Channel?

Before the platform was built, content access, memberships, and payments were managed manually, making the process increasingly time-consuming and difficult to scale as the community grew. Learners also had different levels of digital confidence and colouring experience, with some struggling to know where to begin or what to do next. Feelpixel’s challenge was to turn this manual process into a simpler, more scalable, and engaging digital learning experience.

Feelpixel took a user-centred approach, combining stakeholder discussions, user and competitor research, and journey mapping to understand the business and learner needs. We then focused on helping beginners feel confident getting started, making learning easier to manage and navigate, creating moments that made progress feel rewarding, and giving the team better ways to manage the learning experience

Feelpixel research showed that members had different levels of colouring experience and digital confidence. New members often needed help understanding where to begin, while returning members needed easier ways to discover relevant lessons and continue learning. We also identified that manual content management made it difficult to efficiently organise and scale the growing lesson library.

Feelpixel found that users could lose momentum when they were unsure what to do next. New members needed a clear starting point, while returning members benefited from recommendations, progress cues, and easier access to relevant lessons. These behaviours influenced the decision to create a more guided but flexible learning journey.

Feelpixel looked beyond the learner experience to understand the stakeholders operational challenges. Before the platform, videos, creative content, subscriptions, and member access were managed manually, which was time-consuming and took focus away from content creation. By centralising these workflows, we reduced operational time by around 90%.

The experience combines structured entry points with the freedom to explore. Members receive guidance through onboarding, first projects, recommendations, and organised lesson categories, while browsing and search give them the flexibility to choose what they want to learn and explore based on their interests.

Feelpixel introduced progress, rewards, encouraging messages, and playful interactions throughout the journey. These moments make learning more enjoyable and help members stay motivated to continue learning and creating.

Feelpixel removed pricing complexity by simplifying membership. New members can start with a 7-day free trial, explore the experience before committing, and choose a plan based on what they want to learn. This makes the membership experience more flexible and lowers the barrier to getting started.

Feelpixel gave members more options to upgrade, downgrade, or pause their subscription. This makes it easier to adapt their plan when their needs change, without having to cancel their membership entirely.

Feelpixel worked closely with The Coloring Channel team through ongoing discussions, feedback, design, development, and testing to align the platform with their vision. We also supported beta testing before launch and helped the team through the final stages of launch.
